Visiting court session at the UWED Legal Clinic: students tried on the roles of professional human rights defenders

On May 17, 2025, the Legal Clinic of the University of World Economy and Diplomacy (UWED) transformed into a courtroom for a special off-site session of the Mirzo-Ulugbek Inter-District Court. The proceedings were presided over by Judge A. Kamarov, with close observation from First Vice-Rector for Youth Affairs and Spiritual-Educational Work O. Yusupjonov, Legal Clinic Director Z. Ubaydullaev, and clinic curators I. Cherkashina and G. Mayorova.
Across two simulated civil cases, student clinicians assumed the roles of claimant and respondent, independently assembled evidentiary files, crafted legal arguments, and defended their positions during oral hearings. Judge Kamarov praised their command of substantive and procedural law.
After announcing judgments in each matter, Judge Kamarov explained the reasoning in detail, highlighted common pitfalls for novice litigators, and offered practical guidance on improving evidentiary strategies, courtroom etiquette, and communication with parties.
The UWED Legal Clinic will continue to organize regular on-site court sessions in partnership with courts at various levels. This interactive model equips students with professional expertise while cultivating the leadership skills essential for an international legal career.
