UWED Hosts Annual Tournament in the Traditional Japanese Game of “Karuta”

On November 3, 2026, the University of World Economy and Diplomacy hosted its annual tournament in the traditional Japanese game of “Karuta” for second-year students of the Faculty of International Economics and Management.
Organized by the Department of Oriental Languages, the event brought together students with a keen interest in Japanese language, poetry, and culture.
“Karuta” is a traditional Japanese game based on the classical poetry anthology “Ogura Hyakunin Isshu” (One Hundred Poets, One Poem Each). The game requires focus, speed, a strong memory, and a solid knowledge of Japanese poetry.
Throughout the tournament, students demonstrated exceptional concentration, agility, and Japanese listening comprehension skills, recognizing the poems from the very first syllables recited by the reader.
Holding such events helps foster students' interest in learning Japanese, widely promote Japan's cultural and literary heritage, and advance intercultural dialogue.
The Department of Oriental Languages extends its gratitude to Ikeda Haruki, a student at Hitotsubashi University, and Honjo Saki, a student at the University of Tsukuba, for their close assistance in organizing and running the tournament.
