    The Central Asia Winter School at the University of World Economy and Diplomacy (UWED) is a unique academic initiative designed to deepen understanding of the geopolitical, cultural, and economic dynamics shaping Central Asia today. This five-day immersive program aims to bring together local and international students to foster cross-cultural dialogue, academic exchange, and regional cooperation through lectures, cultural excursions, and interactive activities.

    As one of Uzbekistan’s leading academic institutions, UWED plays a central role in shaping the country’s future diplomats, policymakers, and global thinkers. Established to train specialists in international relations, world economy, and international law, UWED offers a dynamic academic environment where regional and global issues are critically examined. Through its interdisciplinary approach and international partnerships, the university actively contributes to the analysis of contemporary geopolitical trends and the development of practical solutions for regional cooperation and global engagement. Hosting the Central Asia Winter School reflects UWED's commitment to fostering academic excellence and dialogue on issues of regional and international significance.

    Objectives:

    ·        To provide participants with comprehensive insights into Central Asia’s geography, history, security challenges, and regional integration processes.

    ·        To create a platform for young scholars from Uzbekistan and around the world to engage in dialogue, build networks, and collaborate on topics of regional importance.

    ·        To enhance intercultural understanding through cultural tours and social activities, allowing participants to experience the rich heritage of Tashkent and Uzbekistan.

    ·        To encourage critical thinking and collaborative problem-solving on key regional issues such as water cooperation, security, and foreign policy.

    Key Thematic Areas

    The Central Asia Winter School will explore a broad spectrum of interconnected topics through lectures and discussions led by regional and international experts and scholars. The program is built around the following core thematic areas:

    ·        Geopolitical and Regional Dynamics of Central Asia

    ·        Border Issues, Identity, and Regional Cooperation

    ·        Foreign Policy and Strategic Partnerships in Central Asia

    ·        Afghanistan-Central Asia Relations and Security Challenges

    ·        Transboundary Water Management and Environmental Sustainability

    ·        Regional Integration Mechanisms and Consultative Meetings

    ·        Connectivity, Infrastructure, and Economic Corridors

    ·        Uzbekistan’s Evolving Role in Global and Regional Affairs

    Participant Profile and Selection

    The Winter School will bring together a diverse group of 20 participants, comprising 10 international and 10 local students. This balanced composition aims to foster a diverse and inclusive learning environment.

    ·        Application Period: October 22 – November 20, 2025

    ·        Announcement of Results: December 1, 2025

    ·        Application Fee: $10 USD (applicable to both international and local applicants)

    ·        Participation Fee (International students): $200

    ·        Participation Fee (Local students): 1.000.000 UZS

    (A limited number of discounted participation fees will be available for outstanding local applicants based on merit and motivation).

    ·        Selection Criteria: Academic merit, motivation, and relevance of study or research interests related to Central Asia.

    Program Overview

    Dates: January 5-10, 2026

    Venue: Conference Hall, UWED, Tashkent

     

    The program includes:

    ·        Lectures: Delivered by experts on topics such as regional geography, security, foreign policy, and economic integration

    ·        Cultural and Historical Excursions. Visits to key sites including the leading think tank of Uzbekistan, State Museum of the History of the Timurids, Amir Timur Square, Broadway Alley, Independence Square, Shakhidlar Memorial Complex, and Tashkent City Mall.

    ·        Interactive Activities: Team-building exercises and icebreaker sessions to promote networking and collaboration among participants.

    ·        Flexibility on Arrival Day: Participants may arrive at varying times on January 5, with registration and welcome kit distribution available from 14:00 to 18:00 to accommodate travel schedules.

    Expected Outcomes

    ·        Enhanced regional knowledge and academic skills among participants.

    ·        Established networks between local and international students for future collaboration,

    ·        Increased visibility of UWED as a hub for regional studies and international academic exchange.

    ·        Greater appreciation of Central Asia’s cultural diversity and historical legacy.

    ·        Awarding of certificates of participation to all attendees who actively engage in and successfully complete the Winter School program. Additionally, the University will grant 2 ECTS credits to participants upon successful completion of the course requirements.

    Participation & Logistics

    ·        Accommodation and lunch will be provided for international participants during the entire program.

    ·        Local participants will be provided with lunch on all program days.

    ·        All teaching materials and program-related activities free of charge for both local and international participants.

    ·        Participants are responsible for their own international travel arrangements, personal health/travel insurance, and breakfast/dinner.

    ·        Public transportation (metro) will be used for all group site visits within Tashkent.

    ·        The language of instruction for the Winter School is English.

    ·        Local students are responsible for their own accommodations.
