UWED VIS MOOT TEAM ACHIEVES SUCCESS AT AN INTERNATIONAL COMMERCIAL ARBITRATION COMPETITION

From 1 to 4 October this year, the Vis Moot Team of the University of World Economy and Diplomacy (UWED) participated in the annual Central Asia Dispute Resolution Association Kick-Off Pre-Moot, organised by the Central Asia Dispute Resolution Association (CADRA) in cooperation with the Commercial Law Development Program (CLDP) of the U.S. Department of Commerce.
University teams from Central and South Asia, the Caucasus region, and Africa participated in the competition. Participation in such international competitions provides students with opportunities to improve their oral advocacy skills, develop legal arguments, apply international commercial arbitration rules in practice, and exchange experience with representatives of foreign universities.
As a result of the competition, the UWED Vis Moot team reached the final round and secured the title of First Runner-Up.
Furthermore, Kamronbek Shermetov, a fourth-year student at UWED’s Faculty of International Law and a member of the team, won the award for Best Oralist for Respondent.
The UWED Vis Moot team is coached and prepared by representatives of the Department of Civil Law and Private International Law Disciplines, Head of the Department Sherzodbek Masadikov, Professor Dilfuza Imamova and Lecturer Alisher Bobonazarov, UWED alumni Bakhodir Dadaev and Kamola Usmanova, who previously participated in Vis Moot competitions as members of the university team, are also involved in the team’s preparation.
The UWED team’s participation in this event and its successful performance contribute to the achievement of SDG 4, “Quality Education,” particularly Target 4.4, which aims to develop professional skills and competencies relevant to future employment. Preparation for the competition and participation in arbitration hearings help develop analytical thinking, legal writing, oral advocacy, and the practical application of international commercial law.
Furthermore, participation in the international competition contributes to the achievement of SDG 16, “Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions,” particularly Target 16.3, which promotes the rule of law and equal access to justice for all. Studying international commercial arbitration mechanisms and developing skills in resolving cross-border commercial disputes contribute to the training of qualified lawyers capable of applying legal instruments to resolve disputes effectively.
The event also aligns with SDG 17, “Partnerships for the Goals,” which aims to strengthen international cooperation. Participation in the competition promotes the expansion of academic ties, the exchange of professional experience, and the development of cooperation between universities and international organisations in the fields of legal education and dispute resolution.
This achievement demonstrates the high standard of professional training provided at UWED in accordance with international standards and contributes to further strengthening the University’s international academic standing.
