SDG 16 – Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions: Fostering Patriotism in Youth through Historical Heritage and the Memory of Ancestors

On 7 May 2026, Associate Professors Z. Israilova, Sh. Khamdamova and D. Soliyev of the Department of International Law and Public Law Disciplines at the University of World Economy and Diplomacy held a round table at the “Navnihol” mahalla in Mirzo Ulugbek district, Tashkent. The topic was “Fostering Patriotism in the Young Generation through Historical Heritage and the Memory of Ancestors.” The mahalla chairman, H. Sattarov, and local residents took part.
The round table took place on the eve of 9 May, the Day of Remembrance and Honour. The speakers stressed that in an era of globalization, understanding national identity, preserving historical memory and raising young people in a spirit of patriotism are pressing tasks. They noted that remembering the sacrifices of ancestors for the prosperity of the homeland and the freedom of the people strengthens young people’s sense of national pride, tolerance and unity.
Particular attention was paid to the role of families, educational institutions and the mahalla in raising young people. The family gives children their first lessons in patriotism, the education system builds on them with knowledge, and the mahalla serves as an important social school that develops a sense of community and social responsibility.
Residents received explanations on the moral and educational value of historical heritage and the memory of ancestors; the role of families, the mahalla and schools in fostering patriotism; ways to ensure social stability by preserving national values and historical memory; developing social responsibility and dedication among young people; and protecting youth from ideological threats in the age of globalization.
The speakers noted that strengthening tolerance, harmony and social cohesion is directly linked to Sustainable Development Goal 16, “Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions,” and that every citizen has a role in achieving it. The event concluded with answers to residents’ questions.
