UWED STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN THE 33rd INTERNATIONAL COMMERCIAL ARBITRATION MOOT (VIS MOOT) IN VIENNA

From March 27 to April 2 of the current year, the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot (33rd Vis Moot) was held in Vienna.
The team of the University of World Economy and Diplomacy (UWED), consisting of students of the Faculty of International Law Aziza Normukhamatova, Noila Pardaeyeva, Kamronbek Shermetov and Aziza Rakhmatullaeva participated in this prestigious international competition under the coach of Professor Dilfuza Imamova of the Department of Civil Law and Private International Law Disciplines.
During the rounds of the 33rd Vis Moot, the UWED team acted both as claimant and respondent, competing against teams from various universities and countries. The performances were evaluated by arbitrators from different jurisdictions specializing in international commercial arbitration. Particular attention was paid to the quality of legal reasoning, the level of legal argumentation, and the ability to conduct oral pleadings in English. Following the rounds, the arbitrators provided detailed feedback and highlighted the students’ professional and communication strengths.
The competition brought together more than 390 teams from leading universities worldwide, creating a unique platform for academic exchange, intercultural interaction, and the development of practice-oriented competencies in international commercial arbitration. Participation in this event enabled the students to integrate into the international professional community and gain valuable experience in a multicultural legal environment.
In addition, the students had the opportunity to attend hearings of other teams, analyze various models of legal argumentation, and observe the responses of parties to arbitrators’ questions. This contributed to the enhancement of their analytical skills and the development of a comprehensive approach to arbitration proceedings.
The participation of the UWED team in this event directly contributes to the achievement of UN Sustainable Development Goal 16, “Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions”, in particular Target 16.3, which aims to ensure the rule of law and equal access to justice, as well as Goal 17 “Partnerships for the Goals”, particularly target 17.6, which calls for the development of international cooperation in science, technology and innovation and the expansion of access to them.
The knowledge and skills acquired are aimed at strengthening the rule of law and fostering the development of a professional legal community capable of effectively operating in the international legal environment.
