Two-day master class by a Cambridge University professor at UWED

On March 16–17, 2026, the University of World Economy and Diplomacy hosted a two-day masterclass at the Faculty of International Relations featuring Professor and researcher from the University of Cambridge, Dominic Lieven. The events were organized by the Department of Political Science within the courses “Political Management” and “Admission to the Civil Service.”
During the sessions, third-year Political Science and the Faculty of International Relations students were introduced to the key stages in the formation and development of the Russian Empire, including its political system, foreign policy, and its role in international relations between Europe and Asia.
Particular attention was given to governance of a multinational state, the interaction between central and regional authorities, and the impact of historical processes on modern political systems.
Professor Lieven also highlighted the relations between the British and Russian Empires and their influence on the international system, as well as Russia’s role on the global stage in the 20th century. He presented the results of his academic research and discussed methods of historical analysis used in studying international relations.
The masterclasses generated strong interest among students, who actively participated in discussions, asking questions and exchanging views on contemporary issues in international politics and diplomacy.
