On December 1 of this year, the University of World Economy and Diplomacy (JIDU) hosted a masterclass on the topic: “Calculation and Determination of Deadlines in the Civil Law of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the Significance of the Statute of Limitations, Commencement, Types, and Its Connection with Other Branches of Law.”

The masterclass was attended by Azizxon Avaz o‘g‘li Xolxo‘jayev, Legal Counsel from the Tashkent City Health Department, faculty members of the Department of Civil Law and International Private Law, as well as second-year students of the Faculty of International Law.

During the masterclass, the topic was presented by Azizxon Avaz o‘g‘li Xolxo‘jayev and master’s students of the “International Arbitration and Dispute Resolution” program, Jamshid Karomat o‘g‘li Nortojiyev and Feruza Oy Kenja qizi Abdinazarova, with participation from the audience. The discussion covered the concept of deadlines and statutes of limitations in civil law, their emergence, types, commencement, calculation, suspension, and interruption. The application of statutes of limitations in court proceedings, as well as their restoration under certain conditions, and their interrelation with other branches of law — particularly the similarities and differences with labor law—were also discussed.

The masterclass provided students with practical knowledge on calculating and applying statutes of limitations in court practice, distinguishing between general and special statutes, and understanding in which circumstances they apply. Legal practitioner Azizxon Avaz o‘g‘li Xolxo‘jayev also shared examples of court cases involving statutes of limitations and the corresponding rulings. Proper application of deadlines and statutes of limitations ensures fair adjudication and effective protection of parties’ rights in legal proceedings.

Particular attention was paid to the 2015 Resolution No. 282 of the Plenum of the Supreme Economic Court of Uzbekistan regarding the application of civil law provisions on statutes of limitations by economic courts. This was explained in detail by Nargiza Doroyevna Raimova, Professor of the Department of Civil Law and International Private Law, with students given the opportunity to ask detailed questions.

The masterclass aimed to develop students’ skills in correctly calculating deadlines, distinguishing between general and special statutes of limitations, and applying them accurately in practice. It concluded with a discussion of the content of deadlines and statutes of limitations in the civil law system of Uzbekistan, existing shortcomings, analysis of issues in court practice, and the necessary areas for improvement.
