A Lecture by Professor Stefan Ziegler, Expert in Humanitarian Law held at UWED

On October 29, 2025, the University of World Economy and Diplomacy (UWED) hosted a lecture by Professor Stefan Ziegler, a renowned expert in humanitarian law and film director, together with Mr. Alexander Scharer, Advisor of the Embassy of Switzerland in Uzbekistan.
Professor Ziegler delivered a lecture for UWED students on the topic “Studying International Law through Film.” During the event, he presented excerpts from his well-known documentary films.
The lecture focused on the use of film as an artistic medium to explore the norms of international law, their practical implementation, the challenges of human rights protection, and the role of mass media in promoting legal awareness. Professor Ziegler also highlighted the four main stages of filmmaking — research and design, production, distribution, and educational and advocacy work.
An open discussion took place throughout the lecture, during which students asked engaging questions about the role of cinema and media in promoting international law and the modern approaches to human rights protection. Professor Ziegler shared his insights and practical experience in response.
At the end of the event, a Q&A session was held, allowing students to exchange views on the interconnection between humanitarian work, international law, and media.
