International relations and cooperation
The International Relations Office was established in September 1993 in response to the rapidly growing external relations of the University. Its main objectives are to:
- Increase involvement in international activities through expanding the UWED partnership relations with interested foreign educational and research institutions;
- Coordinate exchange programs for the UWED students and faculty members going for study and research abroad;
- Render support to international counterparts visiting UWED aimed at fostering cross-cultural understanding through programs highlighting global themes;
- Promote cross-cultural awareness through integration of international students, researchers, faculty into the campus community;
- Develop and manage UWED contacts with the diplomatic corps accredited in Uzbekistan.
The International Relations Office runs its daily operations in close coordination with other UWED pertinent departments, research and administrative units.
To date, the UWED established successful partnership with over 60 foreign universities, such as New York State University and Oklahoma State University (USA); London Diplomatic Academy of Westminster University (UK); Institute of Political Studies in Toulouse and University of Sorbonne (France); University of Nuremberg and University of Bremen (Germany); University of Bologna (Italy); Vienna Diplomatic Academy (Austria); University of Maastricht (the Netherlands); University of Uppsala (Sweden); Waseda University, Nagoya University and Kokushikan University (Japan); Jawaharlal Nehru University (India); Academy of Social Studies and the Institute of Diplomatic Relations of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs (China); Moscow State Institute of International Relations and Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs (Russian Federation); Ajou University and Kimyong University (Republic of Korea) DAAD and many others.
The International Relations Office is in charge of activities of "The Open Forum" club, which presents an excellent opportunity for students and faculty to meet on a regular basis with heads of foreign embassies and missions accredited in Uzbekistan as well as with dignitaries and prominent scholars visiting Uzbekistan. Among those were the Lithuanian Prime-minister Algirdas Brazauskas, NATO Secretary General Lord George Robertson, UNESCO Secretary General Federico Mayor, U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan Yoriko Kawaguchi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov, Dr. Zbiegnew Brzezinski, the US First lady Hillary Rodham Clinton and others.
